The students at the Agentic AI UW club are working on systems that combine a Large Language Model (LLM)—the "brain" that understands language—with digital "hands."

  • LLM (Large Language Model): A massive mathematical map of human language that predicts the next word in a sentence.
  • Tool Use: The ability for the AI to open a browser, click buttons, or write code to solve a problem.

Imagine telling an AI, "Plan my trip to Tokyo."

A normal AI gives you a list of hotels. An Agentic AI checks your calendar, looks up flights, compares prices, and asks for your credit card to finalize the booking.

Why UW-Madison is Leading the Charge

The university isn't just teaching students how to use these tools; they are teaching them how to build "multi-agent systems."

Think of this like a construction crew. Instead of one giant robot trying to build a house, you have several specialized mini-robots. One acts as the architect, one as the plumber, and one as the foreman.

By teaching these agents to talk to each other, students are creating software that can solve massive, complex problems that would take humans weeks to finish.

We are moving away from "Generative AI" (stuff that creates) and toward "Autonomous AI" (stuff that does).
